Volkswagen has been developing a complete family of electric models covering a wide variety of segments for some time now, and now it's the turn of the classic Bulli van, as they have developed a 100% electric version, the Volkswagen e-Bulli.
This model was going to be unveiled at Techno Classica 2020, but the cancellation of the event due to the global coronavirus crisis has forced VW Commercial Vehicles to unveil it virtually.
But let's talk a little about the new features of this reissued classic. The exterior retains all its charm, as it's based on a 1966 T1 Samba, with the addition of a striking two-tone paint scheme (Energetic Orange Metallic and Golden Sand Metallic Matte). However, some exterior elements have been modernized, such as the headlights, which in the e-Bulli are LED.
Regarding the interior cabin, with capacity for 8 people, although it still maintains a retro feel thanks to its two-tone design and solid wood upholstery, it has actually been significantly modernized since it incorporates, for example, a tablet that serves as an entertainment center.
Where it differs most from its classic version is in the propulsion system. It replaces the original four-cylinder boxer engine with an 83 hp electric motor producing 212 Nm of torque, also mounted in the rear. This gives the vehicle practically double the power of the original, raising its top speed to an electronically limited 130 km/h.
To cope with the increased power of the drive system, the Volkswagen e-Bulli's chassis has also had to be adapted. It features reinforcements of all kinds and a new suspension system. It also boasts a new steering system and four-disc brakes for improved performance.
A 45 kWh battery provides the power, allowing it to travel up to 200 kilometers. With a 50 kW fast charger, it can recharge to 80% capacity in 40 minutes.
