VW Golf GL Problem - Posted by manual-mecanica
Greetings friends, I have a question/problem regarding a 2006 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L. This vehicle won't accelerate past 1500 RPM. I used a scanner and it gave me three fault codes: 17976, 17987, and 17953. My scanner is a Launch X431 Diagun, and it detected the VAG codes and their OBD II definitions.
Code 17976-P1568: Throttle control unit -J338- mechanical failure.
Code 17987-P1579: Throttle valve control unit adaptation not initiated -J338-.
Code 17953-P1545: Throttle valve control faulty.

Could the problem be with the electronic throttle body? Is the throttle body miscalibrated? The owner says they previously checked for the same issue but without success. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it, but the problem persists. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever you clean an electronic throttle body, you must perform a relearn procedure. This is done with the engine off and the ignition on, but first, you must clear the codes and recheck them. If any codes remain, the relearn procedure may not work, depending on the code.
When cleaning the throttle body, be careful not to get solvent into the engine. The solvent, along with any loose carburetor parts, can temporarily jam the throttle plate, causing throttle plate jamming codes.: Laugh:

I think the specific problem is the throttle body, which is faulty and doesn't allow for greater acceleration. Try reprogramming it with the Launch control unit, and if that doesn't work, replace it.

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: VW Golf GL Problem
Greetings... it seems your problem is due to the throttle position sensor (TP) cable becoming disconnected, which has caused it to lose its programming or "learning" settings, resulting in the EPC light (Electronic Power Control) coming on in the dashboard.
You need to read the codes with a scanner and clear them, either with VAG-COM or a CJ4. Bye.

You're going to have to do a basic tune-up, that's for sure, see if that fixes it, because if it's the throttle body that's broken, at the dealership it costs around 8000 pesos...Mexico!!! You're going to need a VAG-COM, where are you? Did the EPC light come on on the dashboard?
