Manual-mechanics response on the topic of gearbox pinions
Hi jasperf1, it's a complicated question since there are many types of gearboxes that work in different ways, and the options to choose from don't help either, since it's a test question I imagine they're referring to a basic three-shaft gearbox (synchronized and helical gears).
,
Based on this, I would not choose option C, since the gears do not move axially when engaging the gears; what moves is the synchronizer to fix the gear to the shaft.
I wouldn't choose B either, because the pinions aren't fixed to the shaft, but rotate on it.
So only A- remains, I don't know what you mean by "overlapping", but by elimination it's the one I would choose.
You'll have to tell us which one is correct.
