Hello, I have a rather big question.

A friend and I are restoring and improving a Renault Clio 16S and we've decided to install power steering.

The steering box is from a Renault Kangoo 1.9D, and to avoid reducing engine power and the hassle of finding a place to house a hydraulic pump driven by the engine itself, we decided to install an electric hydraulic pump from a Peugeot 106 1.4 petrol.

The problem is that neither of us knows how to connect it electrically to the car's wiring, and I don't know how to assemble the hydraulic circuit or connect it to the steering box. I mention this because I've seen cars that have a kind of pressure sensor on one of the hydraulic lines, and I don't know if this part is necessary or not...

Well, I hope you can help me out!

Manual-mechanical response on the topic of power steering installation in a Renault Clio 16V
The electric power steering pump needs a steering angle sensor that's mounted on the steering column.

A standard power steering pump constantly injects fluid; it just comes out through an overflow until you turn the wheel to one side, assisting in that direction.

If you install an electric pump that runs continuously, it will drain your battery.

Newer Seat and Volkswagen models from around 2007 onwards have electric power steering without fluid.

It's integrated into a single unit with a motor and sensor, powered by 12V.

If it's a Renault Clio, install a pump with a belt on the engine; it won't significantly reduce power.

I think the pump, if I remember correctly, has a return line to the tank, and yes, it will drain the battery, but oh well... We'll see... As for the mechanical pump driven by the engine, I think that's a bit difficult, because the 1.8 16V engine has everything very tightly packed and compacted, and even removing the engine from the car or working on it for repairs is a real pain because there's no room to get your hands in...
