I'm having a problem with a rattling or clattering noise from the valves of a 2000 Kia Sportage (gasoline engine), and it sounds like a diesel engine. I was told it could be the hydraulic lifters or the oil pump. How do I test both, or where can I find the repair manual for this vehicle?

If it were the oil pump, the light would come on even with a very small drop in pressure; tappets aren't tested, they're replaced

Sorry, the oil you use directly affects the oil. If it has tappets, it has to be 10W40 or lower, never higher

Thanks for the reply, I'll try changing the oil since it's 20W50, and it all started because they changed the cylinder head gasket and it's been making that noise ever since

In many cases, once the lifters are repaired, they no longer function properly and need to be replaced. I also have one of those Kias, and I use that oil and it doesn't give me any problems with the 20w50
