Timing problems on my X-Trail. Posted by manual-mecanica
Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me. I have a 2003 Nissan X-Trail with a 2.5L gasoline engine, and it has a rattling noise coming from the timing chain. This happens occasionally. I already replaced the timing belt kit, but the noise hasn't gone away, and the old kit was in good condition, as the car only has 72,000 km on it. Does anyone know what it could be?

Hey friend! I wanted to recommend you check the accessory belt tensioner, because I had a client with a similar problem and it was the tensioner that would whip around and make a strange noise. Note: I'm talking about the tensioner arm, not the pulley that tightens it. Anyway, I hope this helps! Cheers!

I've also encountered this accessory belt tensioner problem on several X-Trails, so it's very likely the issue.

You can physically inspect the belt with the engine running, and when you hear the noise, you'll see the belt vibrating along its longest section between pulleys.
