CLACK when braking hard. Posted by manual-mechanics
Hi, I have a problem with my Opel Corsa 1.7 dti. Basically, when I brake hard, there's a loud clunking noise coming from under the gearshift lever, like it's hit a stone or something similar. When I checked it the other day, the front engine mount was broken, but it's still doing it after I replaced it. I've checked the brakes (pads and calipers), and they seem fine, as well as the other mounts and ball joints, and everything appears to be okay. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, how's it going? I'm wondering if it's the ABS making that noise... if not, check the rear engine mount, it might be broken. I'd even check the side engine mounts while you're at it. And if it's still making the noise after all that, check something related to the suspension, the stabilizer bar or something like that.

Look, generally the noise is from the rear engine mount. It looks fine, but move the engine back by hand and see if there's any play. That mount is bolted to the transmission. The problem is that the bolt is harder than the aluminum and corrodes it, leaving a bit of play that isn't visible but you can feel it. If it's not that, check the ball joints or control arms, but I think it's that mount because in my shop I've seen a lot of Corsas with that problem, a lot of them.
