PROBLEMS STARTING AND SHIFTING GEARS Published by manual-mecanica
My 1995 Hyundai Elantra loses power and hesitates when accelerating, but then runs normally once it gets going again. Could the problem be a clogged main jet, or does it use an electronic system? Can anyone help me?
Thanks

If it's a '95 model, it should at least be a single-point injection system, not carbureted. If you had an injection problem, your check engine light would come on, assuming it's in good working order. As I always say and recommend, the best thing to do is run a scan when the problem is with the check engine light. Now, based on the symptoms you've described, which suggest it's losing fuel, in my opinion, the first thing to do is a tune-up: change the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, and wires. Check the catalytic converter to make sure it's not clogged, and if you can, check the compression. But I think with a tune-up it will run fine.

I honestly don't know which check engine light you're talking about that would come on, and it doesn't use a carburetor. I really don't know what condition the spark plugs are in. I bought it in 2006 and I've never done anything to it. I only installed the catalytic converter for the vehicle inspection. Another thing is that when I start it in the mornings, at first it seems like it's running on three cylinders, and then it normalizes after a few seconds. Also, when I bought it, it started with high RPMs, and when it warmed up, the RPMs would drop on their own, settling into an idle. Now I have to keep it revved up until it warms up.

Well, if you could give me another recommendation, I'd appreciate it. I think I'll have to take it to get scanned anyway.

Thanks for your help, Victor.

The light I'm talking about is on the instrument panel. It appears as a small engine icon or the words "check engine." When you turn the ignition on, you'll see this light. Then, when you start the engine, the light should go off. If it doesn't, you have an error code. The idling problem is caused by the IAC valve, or idle air control valve. It could be the source of the problem. It's not normal for it to start on three cylinders and then stabilize. You could have problems with the spark plugs or wires. Now, the IAC valve problem could cause a symptom like the one you mentioned, because at high RPMs or operating temperature, it deactivates or regulates as needed. It works like the starter, but it's electronic.
