Timing problem on a 2000 Ford Focus. Posted by manual-mecanica
Hello friends, my name is Rafael, and it's a pleasure to be part of this kind of page that greatly helps us with our questions and problems. My problem is the following: About two months ago, I had to change the timing belt because it was contaminated with oil from a damaged seal. The mechanic changed the belt, the tensioner, some seals, etc., but now that he's done the job, when the vehicle warms up, it knocks like a diesel. I've already switched from regular to premium gasoline, but it's still the same. Could it be that the mechanic couldn't properly synchronize the engine, or what happened? He told me he didn't have a manual for timing it, so I've come to the point where the mechanic didn't do a good job, but we don't have a diagram of how to synchronize this engine. My engine is a 2.0 DOHC Zetec. If someone could provide me with the information or a diagram of how to synchronize this vehicle, I would be very grateful.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic: Synchronization problem with a 2000 Ford Focus
My friend needs to position piston 1 at top dead center (TDC) and the camshafts on the opposite side. The timing belt has a groove on each camshaft that needs to be horizontal so you can insert a tool to hold it in place (you can make one yourself with a flat iron bar). That way, the engine will be synchronized. Good luck.

It's possible the valves were damaged if the timing is way off... this engine (at least the 1.4 Zetec) doesn't have a key on the pulleys, or even on the crankshaft... as arielll2000 said, you need a tool to align the camshafts from the back, but also another tool that you have to insert into the block by removing a plug, to set the exact TDC on the crankshaft. You can also check this by measuring through spark plug hole #1 with calipers (for example). Hopefully, no valves were damaged!
