Toyota Tercel 2E dead cylinder. Posted by manual-mecanica
Hello everyone on the forum. I have a Toyota Tercel 2E whose timing belt broke. We removed the cylinder head, replaced the damaged valves and valve seals, and reassembled it. But now the same cylinder that failed isn't working. We checked the spark plugs and wires, and they're working; there's spark at the spark plug, but the cylinder is dead. The engine is running on three cylinders. When it's running, we take a reading, and it's that cylinder that's not firing. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks.

I assume they've checked the valve clearances (I understand that engine has 12 valves).

You should check the compression in that cylinder to make sure it's not low.

Now two cylinders, 2 and 3, are dead, and the worst part is that the engine has new piston rings, thinking it was a ring problem, but it isn't. What could it be?

Try blowing compressed air through the spark plug hole with the valves closed into the cylinder where you blow the air to see if the compression is transferring from one cylinder to another. This will tell you if the cylinder head is warped, which is why cylinders 2 and 3 aren't firing. Cheers!

It's with beans, they resurfaced the cylinder head, and the bolt torque is fine. If so, measure the compression; if there isn't any, then add oil to the cylinder and test again. If it magically increases, there are problems with the rings.
