Engine seized. Posted by manual-mecanica
Hi everyone, I have an old Jeep Ebro that's been sitting for 12 years. It's a van, and I think it's seized up from disuse. I tried starting it with a new battery, but the engine didn't turn over at all. What I should do is turn the engine using the crankshaft pulley, but I need a socket wrench larger than 36mm, maybe 38mm or 40mm, because it's quite big, and I don't know where to find them. My question is: If I put it in gear and tow it with another vehicle, could I damage it? The engine has oil and everything, but I'm not sure if it's safe.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic of a seized engine
Hi, if you shift into a higher gear you shouldn't have any problems.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic of a seized engine
Hi Singa18.
You mentioned that the machine has been sitting for several years. Most likely, the engine is seized, and there's a good chance the piston rings or cylinders are damaged. Now you need to pre-lubricate the engine to prevent further damage when moving it. Remove the rocker cover and give the rocker arms a quick rinse with clean oil. Remove the spark plugs and add a little oil to each cylinder. Then, try moving the engine back and forth without the spark plugs in. Good luck!

Manual-mechanics response on the topic of a seized engine
It's a diesel engine, but thank you very much for the information. I've moved it a little; the engine has turned somewhat. It got dark in the end, but one of these days I'm going to try it with the battery to see if it turns. Apparently, looking at the cylinder head, I saw that it's lubricated, which is why I decided to move it a bit. Thanks again for the help. Cheers.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic of a seized engine
Hi Singa18.
Whether the engine is diesel or gasoline doesn't matter, the advice still applies.
