Manual-mechanics' response on the topic of how to tell if the starter solenoid is present
Obviously, if you have it in your hands, it should have a very strong smell; that would mean it's burnt and bad. Now the question is why it won't start. It could be the ignition switch, continuity of the wires, or even shorted brushes. I hope this helps

Or, testing its resistance, if it's burnt, besides the smell, it will have a resistance of 0 or infinite resistance.
As huipi says, it could be a wiring problem from the ignition switch.
But the question is...
does the starter motor turn when you turn the key?

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic of how to tell if the starter solenoid is present
Thank you for your quick responses.
I should mention that the motor was turning, but with very little power.
And when I connected the direct battery cable, it started turning, which it shouldn't do.
