I'm having the following problem: water got into the automatic transmission of my 2000 American Explorer. I noticed it in time, and it didn't last long. I already drained the oil by removing the transmission cover and filter, but it felt like not much came out. I left:( it draining for almost two days, and I washed the filter and cover. I poured in a liter of oil with the cover off until clean oil started coming out. I put a separate oil cooler in and reassembled everything. Then I added a 5-liter jug of Quaker Oats transmission fluid and started the engine. It shifts well, but my question is whether those 5 liters were enough since it doesn't have a dipstick. I should clarify that less than 5 liters came out when I drained it. I also checked the oil again, and it's no longer chocolatey like it was when there was water in it, but pinkish. Do I have to drain the oil again and put in new oil, or just top it off? What's the best thing to do? I need to know urgently because I'm leaving on a trip the day after tomorrow.: S

Friend, I'm afraid you'll have to stop the vehicle. When this happens, it's because the transmission oil cooler is damaged; it's inside the radiator. Otherwise, you'll have to install another one outside.

The problem is that the transmission still has water in it, that's why the oil looks pink. To get it a little cleaner, you'd need to drain the torque converter if it has a drain plug. If it doesn't, you'd have to remove the torque converter and have it cleaned. You might not have any problems now, but you will if the water damages the clutch discs and clogs the valve body

Hi Martin, what you should have done to remove all the transmission fluid from the turbine is disconnect the two cooler hoses and start the car for about 5 to 10 seconds so the turbine generates pressure and removes all the oil from inside. This won't damage the clutch plates since they don't work unless you put it in Drive. I hope it works for you, as it always works for me and I've never had any complaints. Good luck!
