WATER GOT INTO THE ENGINE

During a rainstorm, water got into the engine and it stalled. They drained the water and it started, but it emits a lot of white smoke when it starts cold. Do I have to stop driving it until it's repaired? Could I damage it further if I continue driving it? Could a connecting rod be bent? It's a Peugeot 306 HDI. I hope you can answer me.
