Good evening friends, I'm still working on the repairs to my 2003 Nissan X-Trail. The mechanic told me he found two thermostats in this 2500cc engine and mentioned he might remove one. Could you explain what a thermostat does, why there are two in this engine, and what would happen if he removed one?

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi, I've never seen two thermostats on an engine, and it seems to me that one is unnecessary, because the purpose of a thermostat is to open the water flow as the engine heats up. I don't know why it would have two.

The purpose of a thermostat isn't just to open, but to maintain a vehicle's normal operating temperature. If you had a diagram of that engine's cooling system, you could understand why it has two. I know it has two, and it's very likely that there's some passage or outlet through which water circulates to the radiator even if one of the two is closed. If one of the two is missing, the engine won't operate at the same temperature, which means uneven wear on the parts and inefficient engine performance. When something is added to an engine, it's not for no reason; there's a purpose. If thermostats were added for no reason in warm climates, they wouldn't be used, nor would catalytic converters. In my country, they only have one catalytic converter and one oxygen sensor, but North Americans have two or even four, and the number of cylinders doesn't matter, because the Sentra with the QG18 engine from 2000 to 2003 had four catalytic converters. The fact that your engine has more than one thermostat is not for nothing.

Hi, I agree with Choto. The thing is, some vehicles require an immediate heating system for the interior cabin. One of them has this function: it opens at a temperature before the other thermostat, which is very efficient in very cold climates. Regards

Dude, you've really hit the jackpot with your Extray. It's not such a bad vehicle, but it seems you've had to pay the price for everything at once. Sorry. The forum members are right; the thermostats, besides opening the flow of hot water to the radiator, are responsible for maintaining a stable operating temperature. Sometimes, depending on your geographical location, if the temperature difference between the minimum and maximum isn't substantial, they can be removed without causing much damage. Models with two thermostats are very rare. They can be removed, but I usually only remove them for testing. If it improves or solves the problem, I replace them with new ones. If it's just for testing, it won't damage the vehicle. Try it without fear, and then post the appropriate information.
