To change the timing belt on an XUD or XUDTE engine, you first need to align the timing marks. These marks consist of two 8mm holes on the camshaft and injection pump drive pulleys.
These holes must be aligned with two machined threads, one in the cylinder head and the other in the injection pump bracket. Once aligned, screw in two M8x125 bolts, one on each pulley.
The crankshaft is supposed to be stopped at the flywheel end with a tool that fits into the lower plate of the crankcase seal, which is bolted to and secured to the teeth of the starter ring gear. Since you probably don't have this tool, the best approach is to mark the exact tooth on the top of the sprocket with a permanent marker, correction fluid, or paint, and also mark the corresponding part of the block where it aligns.
This way, with a little care, you shouldn't have any problems setting the timing.
Don't forget to turn the engine twice completely by hand after installing the new belt, and make sure that all the timing marks are aligned.
Best regards.
