It overheated and won't start. Posted by manual-mecanica
Hi everyone, yesterday I was driving on the highway when a water hose burst and the temperature gauge shot up. I only realized what was happening when I heard a strange noise and the needle was already in the red zone.
After two hours, I tried to start it, but it won't start, although the engine turns over, so it's not seized.
What usually happens when this occurs? Is it just a blown head gasket?
It's an Opel Corsa 1.0 12v petrol.
Thanks.

The head gasket blows, or the cylinder head is warped, which means you have to have it resurfaced because water will get into the oil, preventing the engine from starting. You also have to resurface the valves and seats and install new seals.

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: It overheated and won't start
Hello, good evening.
I'd like to confirm your car model; it's an Opel Corsa City 1.0 cc because I know it very well. Regarding your problem, the most likely cause is a cylinder head failure, possibly with a warping in the mounting area. You could start by measuring the compression in each cylinder (14 to 16 bar). This will help confirm or rule out this issue. It's important to measure with all three spark plugs removed. I recommend you be very careful with the repair because this engine has many important details, and the parts are quite expensive. Be careful with camshaft flex and warping of the timing cover.
Write to us and let us know how it goes.
Good luck...

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: It overheated and won't start
It's an Opel Corsa (B) 1.0 12v 3-cylinder). I haven't touched it yet since this happened last Saturday. I plan to remove the cylinder head and check the gasket. If it's blown, which it almost certainly is, I'll buy a cylinder head from a junkyard and hope the lower parts of the engine (crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, etc.) aren't damaged. I'll also have to repair the cooling system. Let's hope it doesn't give me too much trouble. I'll keep you updated on how the operation goes, and thanks for your support. Greetings from Spain.

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: It overheated and won't start
Hi everyone, today I lifted the hood of my Corsa to try and figure out what to do. I removed the entire air filter assembly and first surprise: a burst hose!!! The hose that goes from the cylinder head to the radiator is burst (I'm clarifying that it's the top one because there are two). I assume that hose is connected to the thermostat and I also suspect there's a problem (possibly a stuck thermostat) that caused the damage.
I NEED A WORKSHOP MANUAL URGENTLY!!! If anyone has it or knows where it is, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks
