Despite being an experienced mechanic, I ran into trouble while changing a water pump on a 2004 EcoSport. It has a 2.0L engine with dual overhead camshafts, the same as the Focus and other Fords. It's usually held in place by only three bolts and comes out easily, but this one wasn't so simple and gave me a lot of trouble. After trying to pry it off with a chisel, I only managed to break one of the tabs. Finally, I removed the right headlight, which gave me better access. My advice for these pumps that are so stuck (which is rare) is to take a pry bar and a large hammer and hit it hard on the top near the impeller. Once it loosens, insert a screwdriver into the top and tap it from below. Repeat this process on the top to push the screwdriver in further, and the next time you tap it on the top, it comes right out.
