Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: Subaru Legacy gearbox parts
Hi, I'm looking for the same thing. The reason is that my speedometer stopped working. I discovered that the shorter section of the shift cable broke; there are two, the shorter one. I bought the replacement part, but it didn't work. According to Subaru, they say the transmission needs to be disassembled to change the gear, and it will cost $4000, assuming everything else is normal. I wonder, didn't the Japanese think of making things easier? I hope someone knows about this and can help me solve it. I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance B)

Manual-mechanics' response on the topic Re: Subaru Legacy gearbox parts
Have you tried spinning the wheels in the air to see if the internal mechanism rotates? Or does the coupling connect? Are both sections part of the same head? It's very unusual for the gear to fail unless it's made of plastic...

Manual-mechanics response on the topic Subaru Legacy gearbox parts
In the Subaru Legacy, the mechanics in general are very complicated. For example, to change piston rings, you have to remove the engine and completely disassemble it as if it were a complete overhaul, including the main bearings and connecting rods. That's how complicated Subarus are. So if you end up at a mechanic for a broken ring, be prepared to spend a fortune because the job is enormous. Cheers
