Battery or ignition key? Posted by manual-mecanica
Hi, I have a little problem with my Vivaro. Every now and then, especially when I turn the key to start it, there's a click in the starter, but the engine doesn't turn over. The funny thing is, if I put it in first gear, push a little, barely move the van, and with the ignition key in the start position, the starter immediately starts working. It's like it's locked. Why is this happening?

Manual-mechanics answer regarding the battery or ignition key issue?
Hi, check the starter motor brushes...they're probably worn out. When you take the motor apart, check the shaft bushings. Regards.

To be honest, I've never repaired a starter motor; you can get a new one for 100 euros. But I'd still like to know how it's done... thanks

Remove the starter motor and its rear cover; the brushes will be there. You'll have to ask about the price first, as they're expensive. Once you have the price, you can decide if it's better to go to a junkyard, but before buying one, you should check the brushes on yours to see if they're worn out. Changing the brushes is easy; you just need to be a bit handy to push all the springs in at once. Cheers!
