How do I know what size rings I need? Posted by manual-mecanica
Hi, I recently disassembled the engine of my Toyota Tercel with a 3E 1.5L 1500cc 12-valve engine. The engine block is fine, and the cylinders are in great condition with no scratches. What size piston rings should I order for a perfect fit? The main and connecting rod bearings do look somewhat scratched from wear, and I'd like to replace them. I was hoping you could help me or share some tips on how to repair my Toyota. Thanks in advance!
Best regards and good vibes!

Ideally, you should have everything rebuilt to be sure of the measurements, because if the metal parts are worn, you need to make sure the crankshaft isn't. But to answer your question, the rings are bought in the same size as the piston: if it's standard, you buy standard rings; if it's 0.25, you buy 0.25, and so on.

Hi, I think that when you're going to repair an engine, you should play it safe since disassembly is a bit time-consuming and expensive. Remember that every mistake or step you don't take will cost you another disassembly and an additional expense. I recommend having the engine measured at a machine shop, or if you want to measure it yourself, you'll need a dial indicator, a micrometer, a straightedge, and other tools for this task. Download the workshop manual and measure it according to the procedure.

I recommend

measuring the connecting rod and main bearing diameters of the crankshaft.

Thoroughly inspect the cylinder head, valve guides, valves, seals

, and ideally, replace the cylinder liners.

Regards.

Thank you so much!!! Kikemec, I'm self-taught in automotive mechanics and I decided to fix my Toyota. Now I hope I don't have any leftover parts...hehehe.

Hi! Laptop1, well, I'm doing all the repairs on my motor myself, but you're right, there are parts I need to have machined before I can start. Thanks a lot! Best:)
