Hello everyone, I'm new here. My name is Gonzalo. My problem is this: I have a Renault 19 Diesel RD E [white, 4-door, 4-wheel drive, hehe]. The problem is that when the RPMs drop, the engine stalls, and I have to keep accelerating it, or it will stall again. We thought it might be air conditioning or a relay, but we don't know for sure. We want to be sure. If anyone knows anything about this or has a manual with the answer, I would be very grateful.

Well, I'm a mechanic and I don't have much information.

It's a Renault 19 RE with a diesel engine. It has the engine from a '98 Clio; it's a tank, it lasts a long time, but I don't know much about it. I've been told that the alternator belt frayed and got caught in the timing pulleys, causing the timing belt to jump and destroying the whole engine (cylinder head, valves, and pistons). When I took over the car, the belt had been removed, and the owner doesn't know if it frayed.

I'd like a second opinion if you can provide one. I'd appreciate it. If you want, I can send you some pictures of the car and the make, but it's not that bad. It has a Bosch diesel pump and diesel glow plugs.

Good morning, mate. If you're a mechanic, as you say
, what I would do is:
1) Check the timing belt to make sure it's in good condition. I mean, check that it's aligned with its marks.
2) If it's aligned, I would remove the injectors and even the glow plugs, which is easier, and check if the engine has compression by turning the engine by the crankshaft pulley in the direction of rotation. If it has compression, pray and try to start it.
If it doesn't have compression, you'll have no choice but to remove the cylinder head to see the problem.
I have a Clio at home that had the same problem with the alternator belt, and it broke the camshaft, but it didn't damage the valves, cylinder head, or pistons. It's a matter of luck.
That's what I would do, of course. There will be other members of the forum who have a different opinion.

Cheers

You're right, the best thing to do is check everything Gescan says. It could also be that the pump is out of time, which is why it won't idle smoothly.
You have to check many things, everything Gescan mentions,
especially the timing belt.
Let me know what happens. Regards.
