IAC SENSOR PROBLEM (FORD EXPLORER 97) Posted by manual-mecanica
Dear professional mechanics, I have a 1997 Ford Explorer 4x2. When I connect the IAC sensor, the engine revs up to 2500 RPM, and I don't know what to do. Also, when I'm braking gently to a stop, the automatic transmission seems to hesitate and then suddenly shifts into second gear with a noise, like when the U-joints are damaged. Thank you for your comments, and keep up the good work.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic Re: PROBLEM WITH IAC SENSOR (FORD EXPLORER 97)
Hi Rafael, it has the typical symptoms of a disconnected TPS sensor. Check its wiring (three wires: ground, 5V, and output). If voltage is present (ground and 5V), check the voltage variation of the output wire relative to ground. That is, with the throttle closed, it should be close to 0V, gradually increasing until it reaches maximum opening, which should be close to 5V. There shouldn't be any sudden voltage jumps during this period. If there are, replace the sensor. If you have one available, try another TPS sensor. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

Manual-mechanics response on the topic Re: PROBLEM WITH IAC SENSOR (FORD EXPLORER 97)
Hi, look, in these types of problems, you shouldn't just check the TPS sensor. It could be the TPS sensor, IAC valve, EGR valve, canister purge solenoid, injectors, fuel pump, clogged vacuum hoses, MAP sensor, fuel pressure regulator, etc. You have to see what the scanner indicates and rule out components by testing each one specifically. I recommend you take it to a professional and trusted workshop. Best regards, and I hope you resolve your problem and post the results. Sincerely, Isai Curiel.
