Nissan has awarded the production of a new tourism Barcelona plant , after reaching an agreement with the representation of workers to improve competitiveness. The production of this new vehicle will begin in July 2014.
The launch of the new model will involve an annual production of 80,000 units, an investment of 110 million euros, as well as the creation of 1,000 direct jobs, 3,000 indirect jobs, and separate the Barcelona factory from the production of industrial vehicles and 4x4, very affected by the current economic crisis.
In addition to the new vehicle, Nissan has also awarded the manufacture of 24,000 additional units of the 1TN Pick Up units to the Barcelona plant, which will mean an investment of 14 million euros, and the assembly of the gearbox for electric vehicles Nissan Leaf and Env200, which will behave an associated investment of 6 million euros.
In total, Nissan plans to invest more than 130 million euros in the plant in order to renew the productive lines for the manufacture of the new tourism, for the introduction of the technological advances necessary for the production of vehicles with 100% electric technology, as well as for the adaptation of the supplier park to the new productive needs.
The new investments are added to the more than 290 million euros of investment announced in 2012 for the production of a new truck at the Avila plant and new pieces at the Cantabria plant, as well as for the manufacture of the second 100% electric product of the company, the E-NV200 and the introduction of the 1TN Pick Up at the Barcelona .
All this demonstrates the importance of Spain's industrial operations for Nissan and involves a positive response to the efforts made by employees, unions and governments for the improvement of competitiveness.
