The BMW Concept Active Tourer that is exposed in the 2012 Parisian Motor Show is the first car of the brand that despite being a compact car combines comfort, spaciousness and functionality with dynamism.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer is a plug-in hybrid car and includes the EDRive propulsion concept, already known for its use in the BMW I8, which will be the reference to be followed in all future Plug-In-type hybrid propulsion systems. It contains all the components corresponding to the electric motor, that is, the brand's own development motor, the Ion-Litio battery and the Motor Smart Management System.

Sports and comfort aesthetics
The BMW Concept Active Tourer has an outer length of 4,350 millimeters, a width of 1,834 millimeters and a total height of 1,560 millimeters. However, the great wheelbase of 2,670 millimeters, the high ceiling line, the compact motor mounted in a transverse position, combined with front -wheel drive, get an extremely spacious cabin. The BMW BMW Concept Active Touler trunk guarantees that it is a useful car for daily use, since the batteries of the hybrid propeller system are under the floor of the load compartment.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer has a sporty and elegant appearance. It also has an exclusive exterior color High Reflection Silver. On the other hand, it includes aluminum applications in the front, on the sides and on the rear they accentuate the car's aesthetics interesting. The upper surfaces of the body are bright polished finish, while in the lower part it was chosen for a silky mate polished. The fine alternation of matt and bright surfaces underlines the changing clear and shaded appearance of the new exterior color.

The front of the BMW Concept Active Tourer maintains the aesthetics of the brand. The predominant element is the double ovoid grill, typical of the BMW brand, slightly tilted forward. The double headlights that last a good stretch in the wheel steps, are provided with the LED slats that resemble eyelashes. These optical groups and the segmented surface of the front skirt accentuate the sporting character of the BMW Concept Active Tourer. In addition, large side air inlets found under the headlights underline the width of the front of the car.

Seen from the one hand, the elongated silhouette with insinuated wedge shape gives the BMW Concept Active Tourer a very dynamic expression. The handles integrated on the surface of the doors, the side skirts of pronounced shapes and the large 20 -inch tires, enhance the sport and elegant image of the BMW Concept Active Tourer. Little blankets on the front and rear, as well as the great wheelbase, result in compact exterior dimensions and an unusually spacious cabin. Thanks to the high roof line and the large front and rear doors, it is very easy to access inside and take a seat in any of the squares.

On the back of this compact BMW model the horizontal lines of the body prevail. The great posterior pilots who extend on the sides of the car, emphasize the width of the flanks in the rear wheel area. Thanks to the large size of the posterior gate, the cargo plane of the trunk is very low and the space that leaves the door open is very large, so it is very easy to place or remove the load.

A spacious and elegant cabin
"streakline" wood of porous and consistent appearance of a single -piece, acts as an element of union between the upper and lower decorative surfaces of the dashboard. In this way, the front of the cabin acquires an especially elegant and light image. The coatings of the doors and the upholstery of the seats combine an agamuzado cloud leather finish very soft to the touch and light color, with surfaces of the same smooth finish skin, which with its silky brightness determines the luxurious character inside the car. The contrasting orange seams additionally underline the sporting nature of the vehicle. The central console, which is between the two front seats, seems to be suspended in the air, and extends with flowing lines to the dashboard. Thanks to this configuration, both the driver and his companion enjoy a large space in the feet area.

The command post is ergonomically oriented towards the driver, as usual in the BMW brand cars. In this way, access to all control elements is optimal. Round Black-Panel technology instruments and the central information screen, mounted on the dashboard, are optimally located in the field of vision. If the driver wishes, a glass surface appears between the steering wheel and the windshield, on which the color image of the virtual screen is projected, which constitutes a novelty in the segment of the compact cars. The highest front seats, which allow to assume a comfortable position for driving, enjoying an excellent visibility towards all sides, complete the optimal quality of control and comfort systems.

The new BMW Concept Active Tourer incorporates the panoramic roof "Cool Shade"
This glazed segment is extended along the entire BMW roof surface of the BMW Concept Active Tourer. The compound material is provided with the innovative suspended particle technology SPD (suspended particle device), with which it is enough to press a button to obtain the effect of clarity or darkness and the thermal sensation that is preferred. The transparency of the glazed roof changes in dark hue, equivalent to that of sunglasses, to complete transparency. And if preferred, a very special effect can be obtained, since it is manually possible to activate a design that simulates leaves distributed throughout the glass roof surface. The molecular structure of the glazed surface changes due to electrical impulses, which allows them to regulate, according to preferences and continuously, the surface characteristics between the ends of clarity and darkness. In this way it is also possible to obtain an effect that resembles Chinese shadows, with which the sensation of spaciosity in the cabin is increased and a very pleasant light atmosphere is created, which can be enjoyed from any of the seats.

Travel & Comfort system
thanks to the great wheelbase, people who occupy the posterior seats have a lot of legs for the legs. In addition, the slightly elevated roof allows great freedom of movement. Thanks to the large volume of the cabin, it is very comfortable to access the seats or get out of the car. The volume of the trunk can vary considerably, since the backs of the posterior seats can be killed in various ways. Specifically, backup segments can be folded in a relationship of 40:20:40. Drawing the three backups, a uniform plane is available in the trunk.

In addition to the various possibilities of expanding the volume of the trunk, the BMW Concept Active Tourer has the Travel & Comfort system, which includes various ingenious solutions that are available to the passengers of the background. The back of the backs of the front seats has incorporated a central vertical metal profile. It is an innovative system provided with clips to quickly and easily assembled and adjustable height boards, but also various bags to store objects. The system also allows you to use any tablet-PC comfortably from the posterior seats. Tablet-PC can be fixed in a horizontal or vertical position using the system clips, to navigate on the Internet, play or simply watch a movie, placing the electronic device at the height of the eyes.

Multifunction screen on the instrument board

Although the usual system of four round instruments is maintained, the driver can access completely new forms of graphic representation thanks to Black-Panel technology. For example, the form of representation of the information changes according to the choice of comfort modes, sport or eco pro. In addition, it is possible to select different colors. In this way, the system is distinguished by offering more security, being more efficient and exemplary ergonomic. Therefore, the driver always receives on the board the information that best reflects the dynamic conditions of his car.

Application "Six Surf"
The new "Six Surf" application allows passengers to take a seat in the back of the BMW Concept Active Tourer experience fascinating technology playing with their iPad. "Sixmic Surf" is able to create a virtual environment in real time. It is a fascinating car racing game, although according to ecological criteria. The values ​​corresponding to the acceleration, the motor revolutions and other relevant parameters of the car, come directly from the BMW Concept Active Tourer. Depending on real driving, the game interprets the corresponding values, which means that the application software raises new challenges during the game.

The goal of the game consists in accumulating the greatest number of points along the virtual path, leaving proof of the most efficient driving style. For his part, the driver participates in the game to the extent that he decides the level of difficulty of the ecological game. If you opt for a forecast driving style, the game is simpler. If you prefer a sports driving style, a sinuous, much more complicated path appears in the game. Only the combination between a driver who opts for a more efficient driving style, and a skilled player sitting in the background, results in a high score. And only this is the possibility of finishing the game occupying a place on the podium, which is shared in the BMW games network.

HEAD-UP-DISPLAY with high-resolution graphs and complete chromatic spectrum
The BMW Concept Active Tourer has a virtual Head-Up-Up-Display colors screen. In the projection all the most important information appears, with high resolution graphs. The image is projected on a scamotable glass plate that appears directly in the visual field of the driver. The intensity of the projected images adapts automatically to the light conditions of the environment. The day and night design changes as the design of the instruments on the board changes. In addition to the speed, notifications on speed and prohibition limits can also appear to advance, as the driver prefers. Various warnings appear additionally in order to help the driver. Considering the numerous existing driver assistance systems, it is possible that on the virtual screen a so far unusual information appears.

Central Black-Panel design screen
The 8-inch screen allows you to navigate in the menus of the new navigation system and plan travel routes. The central screen also informs at all times about the current state of the operation of the hybrid system. For example, the driver receives constant information about the activation of the combustion engine and the electric motor, so it can better understand the flow of energy in the system. The functional electronics of the hybrid system shares the same network with the Plus navigation system, to guarantee the maximum efficiency of the hybrid propeller set. Using diverse data such as, for example, road layout, speed limits and traffic density, the system conditions the car operation in advance to take advantage of the energy available with maximum efficiency.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer propulsion system
The BMW Concept Active Tourer is a plug-in hybrid car, which means that it takes advantage of the advantages offered by the electric motor, combining them optimally with those of a conventional combustion engine. Phev type cars (Plug-in-Hybrid Electric Vehicle) will assume a very important role in the future. The plug-in hybrid cars have, for the most part, autonomies clearly greater than 20 kilometers running only the electric motor, which means that its operation is efficient both in short journeys, and during long trips and, also, in mixed paths, taking advantage of the operation of both engines. In the specific case of the BMW Concept Active Tourer, it is the perfect combination between a 1,500 cc gasoline engine of advanced technology, included in the new generation of EFFICIENT DYNAMICS engines of BMW Group, and a synchronized electric motor.

The 1,500 cc gasoline engine does not act on the rear wheels, as usual in the brand. He does it on the front wheels. The additional electric motor of the BMW Concept Active Tourer acts on the posterior axis and is able to propel the car on its own, without combustion engine intervention.

Thanks to the total power of the complete system of 140 kW/190 hp, the combustion and electric motor combination of the BMW Concept Active Tourer results in frankly sports benefits. Despite this, the levels of consumption and emissions are very low. The BMW Concept Active Tourer is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds. The peak speed of this dynamic hybrid car is approximately 200 km/h. Despite these fascinating benefits, the average consumption is less than 2.5 liters at 100 kilometers, and CO2 emissions do not reach 60 grams per kilometer.

In addition to more than convincing benefits, the innovative BMW Concept Active Touler propulsion system also results in comfortable and dynamic behavior at the same time.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer combustion engine is an ultra -modern propeller of 1,500 cc with BMW Twinpower Turbo technology. This engine, from the six -cylinder engine with BMW Twinpower Turbo technology, combines the latest generation of the High Precision Injection gasoline injection system with the ValveTronic valve -valve regulation system and, in addition, with the most modern turbo system. The BMW Twinpower Turbo technology will be used in all the propellers that will integrate the future EFFICIENT DYNAMICS of BMW Group. One of the advantages of that technology is that it can be applied in any engine, regardless of its total displacement, and regardless of the number of cylinders. The new three -cylinder engine of the BMW Concept Active Tourer is one of the first of this new generation of thrusters. The compact motor of three cylinders online combines dynamism with efficiency.

The new BMW Twinpower Turbo tricylinder engine has specific aracteristic advantages: silky functioning, rapid rise in revolutions, immediate responses and dynamic and sports sound. Considering the absence of first and second order mass forces, its operation is very silent, and its level of vibrations is minimal. The angular momentum is less than in the case of a four -cylinder engine. And the remaining moment is completely suppressed by a compensation tree. In this way, the engine is very silky, even low revolutions.

Synchronized electric motor
The synchronized electric motor of the BMW Concept Active Tourer is also a product of BMW Group's own development work. If the battery is completely charged, the BMW Concept Active Tourer offers an autonomy of more than 30 kilometers, assuming that the electric motor is only working. This means that most sections conducted daily can be traveled without generating harmful emissions. In addition, the power of the synchronized electric motor can be used additionally through the "Boost" function, for example when circumstances require accelerating with greater force. The driver has in both cases a spontaneous and immediate delivery of the power. The maximum torque of more than 200 Nm is available from the moment the car is set in motion.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer ion-lithium battery can be recharged in any 200 volt power outlet. In order to increase the efficiency of the plug-in-type hybrid propeller, the car is able to take advantage of the energy generated in the two BMW Concept Active Tourer axes to feed it to the ion-lithium battery. The electric motor has a maximum recovery capacity on the posterior axis every time the car slows down, and the high voltage alternator connected to the combustion engine is responsible for additionally loading the accumulator.

Intelligent energy management
The forecast function can increase the degree of efficiency of the electric motor and high -performance battery. The system resorts to the data from the browser, so that it calculates the most appropriate journeys in advance considering the traffic situation, in order to choose to use the electric motor and decide when the battery must be recharged. With the help of this optimized load strategy, it is possible to save up to ten percent of energy and, in addition, the journey traveled only with the electric motor can be extended.

ECO PRO MODE
The BMW Concept Active Tourer includes the Eco Pro mode, which is also offered in the BMW current range models. The ECO PRO increases efficiency, for example, reducing the power of the cabin air conditioner and the consumption of other comfort functions, when circumstances advise it. In addition, it regulates all components of the propeller set according to the dynamic conditions of the car, in order to obtain a maximum level of efficiency.

The Eco Pro mode additionally offers various valuable suggestions to the driver. To achieve this, the system is coupled to the navigation system. Using the data calculated on the route and resorting to the memorized data on the driving style, the Eco Pro sample mode, among others, how to get to the destination consuming as much as possible. The anticipative wizard tells the driver that, for example, "remove the foot from the accelerator" when the car approaches a closed curve or a section with speed limit that he still cannot see. The anticipative wizard takes into account curves, inputs to urban areas, roundabouts, cross crossings and highways. At the same time, the anticipative assistance system of the gearbox optimizes the electronic regulation of the box depending on imminent situations.

In addition, the ECO PRO mode is able to activate the planning mode driving when the car advances at a speed between 50 to 160 km/h. To that end, the system completely disconnects the combustion engine if the car has a speed of up to 125 km/h, being in the deceleration phase. Additionally, it decouples from the box to a speed of 160 km/h, allowing comfortable conduction, with optimal use of the dynamic energy generated before.
