I have no experience with Nissan specifically, but in other brands there is an impact sensor that is, as you describe, a short current and short fuel to avoid the possible fire in case of collision.
The fact is that after a period of time the vehicle is contained normal again but the malfunction alert remains as a warning that the event occurred.
